England Under-20s exited the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup at the last 16 stage following a 3-0 defeat against Nigeria on Thursday afternoon.

Gale, who joined the Magpies on a season-long loan from Arsenal, was introduced in the 85th minute at the Bielsko-Biała Stadium in Poland but their World Cup journey came to an end following goals from Tosin Rafiu, Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei and Mary Mamadu.

Lydia Bedford's side qualified for the competition's knockout stages after finishing in second place of Group B, which contained Brazil, Canada and Tanzania.

Gale struck for England Women in their second group game as they thrashed Tanzania 5-1 to claim their sole win at the tournament.

The 20-year-old forward came off the bench on the hour at the Bielsko-Biala Stadium as Rachel Maltby's hat-trick helped the Three Lions to victory.

Gale’s big moment arrived shortly after entering the fray as she poked home her side's fifth of the game to register her first goal at the tournament, having made her Under-20 World Cup bow as a 77th-minute substitute for Princess Ademiluyi in their 1-1 opening-game draw with Canada at the same stadium.
