The 22-year-old, who left St. James' Park in the summer, linked up with the National League outfit on a short-term deal on Tuesday afternoon and went straight into their starting 11 against Harrogate Town.

Pools were beaten 1-0 at Victoria Park, with Bailey Hobson's second half strike proving decisive on Thompson's bow for the managerless side.

Having risen through the ranks at St. James' Park, Thompson spent time on loan at Northampton Town, Chesterfield and Ayr United in recent seasons.

He also featured in the Magpies' first team squad under Eddie Howe, and was an unused substitute in United's Champions League league phase fixtures against Barcelona, Union Saint-Gilloise, Benfica, Athletic Club, Marseille, Bayer Leverkusen and PSV Eindhoven.
