A week after signing her first professional contract, Abbie Richardson was handed her Newcastle United Women debut at Aston Villa on Wednesday night.

The 18-year-old has progressed through the club's youth set-up and became the first player to pen a pro deal after coming through the PGA (Professional Game Academy).

Richardson was named in four matchday squads last season without making her bow, but replaced Lois Joel in the 87th minute at Keys Park in the Subway Players Cup clash.

"It was a bit nerve-racking, but I was also just so excited to be out there," the young defender said post-match.

"It's such an amazing opportunity coming up against WSL (Women's Super League) opposition, and I was just so excited when I got the shout to say I was going on.

"When I was stood on the sidelines waiting to go on, I didn't feel nervous anymore and just wanted to get out there, and it was just a really special feeling."

Richardson had little choice in who she would support growing up; it was black and white through and through, with her parents having season tickets at St. James' Park.

"It was unreal for my mam and dad to be here and getting to see me come on," she added. "I got to speak to them after the game too, which was really nice to see how buzzing they were.

"It's such a dream come true. I was in a few matchday squads last season but I always knew that it would mean so much more if I could finally get on the pitch."

Tanya Oxtoby handed full debuts to Gemma Evans, Hanna Németh and Kayla Rendell on Wednesday evening, before also giving bows to both Richardson and Casi Gregson.

The pair spent this past summer with the first-team in pre-season - a sign of trust from the coaching staff and manager Oxtoby.

"She just told me to enjoy it, and that I've earned it, and just give it my best in the time I had on the pitch," said Richardson.

"I was over the moon for Casi (Gregson) as well because we've both worked so hard, and I think we both deserved this opportunity.

"I think there is definitely more to come from the PGA, and Casi and I making our debuts shows there is a pathway here."
